Associate Professor Peter Howard commenced as a Trustee of Mary Aikenhead Ministries (MAM) on 1 May 2019. His time as a Trustee was cut short due to ill-health, and Peter resigned on 31 October 2023. Sadly, after a lengthy cancer battle, Peter died on Tuesday 13 February 2024.
Peter always lived his life by the Gospel Values – Hope, Justice, Love and Service. This was evident both in his academic life and in his time as a Trustee.
Peter made a significant contribution to MAM, bringing a special commitment to MAM’s value of Preferential Option for the Poor. He had a particular interest in the work done with our indigenous brothers and sisters and those in prison. Wherever that work could be expanded he was a great supporter.
Peter’s gentle approach was greatly valued and his advice well listened to. He loved the work of our Ministries and was happiest when he was visiting them, seeing the work done and speaking with the people who served there. During stewardship visits he would often be the one seeking out the quiet worker, and to use his words, having a “yarn” with them. He never forgot a face.
Peter was a kind and compassionate man and he will be greatly missed by all of us at MAM and all who knew him. We share a deep sadness for his loss but take some comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering.
May he rest peacefully in God’s hands.

In your hands, O Lord,

In this life you embraced him with your tender love;
deliver him now from every evil
and bid him eternal rest.
The old order has passed away:
welcome Peter into paradise,
where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain,
but fullness of peace and joy
with your Son and the Holy Spirit
forever and ever. Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto Peter, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace. Amen.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace. Amen.
